Page wire fencing is along the road and property boundaries. Page wire could allow for a very small dog to go through it. The front gate has a space under it that a small dog could go under. At some points along the barn yard in the first...

Sometimes

Our neighbour's across the street have dogs that are fenced in and you might hear them barking. Our next door neighbour sometimes (very rarely) has visiting dogs fenced in his backyard. The fencing is page wire (see previous details). We do not have any dogs of our own.

We have 3 donkeys that are secured in a paddock that does not have easy access for dogs. They are not always visible. There is a farm gate and page wire fence between the property and the paddock. A small dog could get under the main gate if they were determined. Donkeys like people, but not dogs, so don't allow your dogs to enter the paddock. ** This is for the safety of your dogs.

Sometimes

- People may walk or cycle past when you are close to the road. - Sometimes there may be someone working around the barn and quonset hut, but we will do our best to avoid this. They may have an ATV, truck, weed eater, or lawnmower. - When you are on the walking trail, you should not encounter any people. If you do, please let us know. We do provide guests with our phone number. - Rarely, there will be farming activity (people and machines) on the property beyond the owner's control. If this occurs, and you feel as if you can't walk, we will give you a coupon to visit on another date, at no cost to you. We do our best to communicate with the farmer to avoid such things but it doesn't always work out. - Note that our calendar will be blocked whenever the property is being used for any sort of hunting, so no Sniffspot guests would even be able to book at those times.

Description

Updated June 30 2025: All trails are open! Daily 7:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. we offer a partially fenced 100 acre property where your dogs can run free. Currently, we have 4 official (3 miles of) groomed trails, plus 2 groomed 1 acre field play areas and 3 large wheat fields that are great for dogs to play in. The main trail and playing fields are cut short if you wish to avoid longish grass. We have chairs available in the first field for you to relax. We have a Chuckit and balls available, fresh well water in a bucket, for dogs, and bowls, and a garbage can in the first field also. There is a pond at the bottom of the first field to the right. Be advised that in spring there are geese and ducks that nest there; please prevent your dogs from harassing the wildlife. I don't recommend the pond for swimming for humans at all and only for dogs in May, but dogs swim in there all summer and fall; it's your choice. In winter, the pond poses a danger. Please don't allow people or dogs to go on to the ice. There will be a warning sign in winter. From there we have a mile long gravel walking trail along fields and woods. It's very straight, and if you stay on the trail, you can't get lost. It is very quiet and peaceful. At the beginning there is currently a large wheat field to the East. You can often see deer, wild turkeys and lots of birds, sometimes bald eagles. A walk to the end and back is 2 miles and takes 40 minutes at a moderate pace. Part way back the main trail goes through a shallow marsh. In the spring the frogs singing is quite remarkable! Further along there is a small run-off creek and metal culvert that is suitable for dog swimming when it is filled with water. This is marked with orange pylons so is avoidable if you put your dogs back on a lead as you pass. Just past the culvert, there are 2 fields going East that are planted with soybean. We have trails cut around these that go along woods and takes about 15 minutes, ending back on the main trail. Further down the main trail, there are several wheat fields and you can go wherever you like on these fields. We have cut trails around the edge of the first field and through it connecting with another cut trail that links to The Shady Trail. As you walk through, you'll eventually see a red arrow sign that sends you down The Shady Trail and ends up back at the main trail. If you just travel along the main trail you will reach the big hill. Going East at the base of the hill is the entrance to The Shady Trail, a nice short trail going through the cedars. The entrance is marked with orange tape. This trail ends at a small field with a deer stand in it. In and back would take about 10 minutes. The main trail ends at the top of the big hill. Please stay out of the woods spring through fall due to ticks. You can use the woods once cold weather comes, provided you can find your way out. We do have ATV trails with entrances along the big hill, marked by private property signage. These trails aren't always obvious to others and we don't want folks getting lost so please keep your bearings. Be dressed for gravel on the trail, uneven footing on the side trails, and potential water and mud puddles on the property in wet seasons and after rain. During spring and summer, prepare for insects. Wear hats and repellent. ** The mains trail can be icy in spots in winter so wear appropriate boots. The main trail runs North/South so if you want a sunny walk, go at midday. A shaded walk, go after 3 p.m. We have a white garbage can for poop but please use biodegradable dog poop bags. Please remove your dogs' poop wherever they go! ***IMPORTANT: all prices listed are in USD, $11 per hour for the first dog, subsequent dogs are $5.50/hour. On your way home, stop at MacKinnon's brewery just down the road for food and drinks. They are dog and family friendly; an all around great place to visit! Hazards

HOST NOTE

This spot has water features, make sure to review these guidelines for visiting spots with water before visiting: https://help.sniffspot.com/article/167-how-to-keep-your-dog-safe-around-pools-and-wa - In winter, the main trail could be icy in spots so please be careful and wear appropriate footwear. - Three donkeys are safely secured in their fenced paddock (see details above). They are very sweet but will kick and bite dogs if they are chased. Keep your dogs out of the paddock. - Pond and drainage ditch. The pond is very deep and gets weedy in the summer/fall. It is located across from the deer decoy in the first field and is difficult to see in summer. ** Do Not allow people or your dog to go on the ice of this pond in winter. ** - The pond is home to some wild life such as geese and ducks in spring and summer and otters and muskrat at all times. These animals can bite dogs. If you feel your dog will attempt to attack these animals if seen, please keep the dogs on leash until you get past the pond. - The drainage ditch and metal culvert are part way back on the trail. This is full of water in the spring and is suitable for dogs to swim as it's simply run-off. For those who wish to avoid it, the culvert is marked by caution cones. Make sure to review the previously noted guidelines for visiting Spots with water. - Wildlife. Usually only seen from a distance but could hurt a dog if they managed to get close, which is highly unlikely: fisher, weasels, deer, wild turkeys, geese, coyotes, raccoons, porcupines, skunks. - Coyotes. Very rarely seen during the day, coyotes become bolder at night. Do not walk the property after dark with small dogs as coyotes may attempt to prey on small dogs. - Birds of prey. These are commonly seen flying but could go after very small dogs, if they are far from a person: eagles, hawks and owls. - Deer ticks. These are mainly in the woods and long grass. Use regular doggy precautions for ticks. Although less active in winter, they will appear on warm winter days. People should spray their shoes and legs with deet repellent. If you are very concerned about deer ticks, avoid the woods altogether and stay on the main trail where the grass is short. - Plants. Poison oak and ivy are in the woods mainly. Wild Parsnip in the fields. Familiarize yourself with these plants. If you crush Wild Parsnip, the juice will cause painful blisters on your skin. I've never seen it bother dogs. Walking or brushing by it does no harm. https://www.ontario.ca/page/wild-parsnip -Mushrooms. The woods are full of many varieties of mushrooms and fungi year round. Let's assume they are all toxic so be mindful to not allow your dogs or people to eat these. - Larger gravel on the path could turn an ankle so be observant and wear good shoes. - Uneven ground in the woods, around the fields and on wooded trails could turn an ankle; wear good shoes. - Biting flies. Carry a small towel to shoo them off in summer. Wear hats and repellent during spring and summer. - Old fencing. We have removed all hazardous fencing that we have found. This is to avoid tripping and entanglement of people and animals. However, we cannot guarantee that we have found it all, especially on the edges of our property in the woods. Please be diligent and mindful of where you walk. Try to stay on established trails to avoid this potential problem. - Wind. If it is very windy, we do not recommend using the Spot due to the chance of falling branches. ** Stay out of the woods on windy days ** Here is the Weather Network link to our area: https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en/city/ca/ontario/millers-corner/current - There are tall deer stands on the property. Please do not allow people or dogs to climb up them since they pose a fall hazard. -Note that in Ontario October, November and December is deer hunting season so it is advised to always wear bright colours, wherever you walk! When people are hunting on our property, it will be closed for walking.
