Service areas:

Located in Anne Arundel County, MD but working to place seniors everywhere!

SDS provides a safe haven for senior dogs who cannot be cared for by their owners, are abandoned or abused, or face euthanasia. Our sanctuary has provided a safe, loving home for over 900 dogs since 2016. Our staff and volunteers supply residents with expert-level care and rehabilitation until they are adopted. We also provide long-term homes to seniors who aren't currently adoptable.

Mission and Vision

We provide a safe haven for senior dogs who cannot be cared for by their owners, are abandoned or abused, or face euthanasia.

Specialization

  • Senior dog

Adoption Policy

It is the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland's policy to attempt to place each of our rescued dogs in a well-suited home to their needs. We work hard at matching our dogs to adopters so they may end their search for a loving, permanent home. Temperament, special needs, and personality are all factors in our placements. Please be aware that adoptions are not completed on a first-come, first-served basis but rather by striving to find the best-suited match for our dogs' needs. Completing an application does not put a hold on a dog. We accept up to 3 applications on each dog and work towards finding the perfect match promptly. Once an animal is placed in our rescue, the animal cannot be sold, given away, or otherwise transferred. If the adopter is, at any time, unable to keep or continue to maintain the animal for any reason, the animal must be returned to the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland, as required by our Adoption Contract.

"Giving older dogs a chance at love before crossing the rainbow bridge"

"I began volunteering at the Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland because I wanted to get more exercise in a meaningful way. Little did I know the impact this organization has had on me and the lives of the senior dogs that I have come to know and love. I now know how much the staff and volunteers care for the animals with the mission of rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome. For the seniors that come to the shelter that are unable to find a forever home, it is a place to live their remaining days with compassionate care. However, the Sanctuary works diligently to get its charges a home of their own. While volunteering as a dog walker, I met my soul dog Jelly Bean, who came to live her last days as the center of my world. I am grateful for the work the Sanctuary does on behalf of senior dogs and in support of the community to help the dogs of local senior citizens remain in their homes. I am proud to be a part of this worthy organization."

"Senior Dog Sanctuary is just about as wonderful a place for senior dog to be. They have a food bank and a wonderful program that connects senior humans to senior citizens for companionship."

"The Senior Dog Sanctuary is located on a beautiful piece of land that has been designed to provide the senior dog residents with access to a long walking path, a pond, and all of the wildlife one could bark at. The building on the Sanctuary grounds is a home that has been converted to optimize every space for the well-being of the dogs. There is an area for grooming, one for vet visits, and one for enrichment. Although each of the dogs has it's own kennel space, the dogs are regularly given time in the many indoor and outdoor spaces that give them room to play, sniff, socialize with humans and other dogs, and lie in the sun. The dogs are showered with love by the staff and volunteers. Many of the senior dogs have been relinquished due to the loss of loved ones and although it must be a scary time for them, they could not be in better hands. Many of the senior dogs are adopted into loving homes where they can live out their days. The Sanctuary also gives back generously to the community by helping human seniors who have pets in the area and it has recently opened a shed on the property where these pet-owners can come to receive assistance with pet food and other items. The fact that the Sanctuary recognized and addressed the need in the community for an organization who cares for an often forgotten population of dogs is a beautiful thing to witness. I wish that all dogs in need had a place to go like the Senior Dog Sanctuary."

"Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland has a special place in our hearts because we adopted our sweet blind boy Sir Cuervo (aka Superman) from the rescue. We traveled four hours to do a meet and greet with our deaf dog Blanca and it could not have been a better match between the two pups. After Cuervo adopted US, we went home to make sure that the house would be ready and when we got the approval, we traveled again to pick up our boy. The staff at the sanctuary were all so nice, welcoming and very helpful through the process. I would recommend Senior Dog Sanctuary of Maryland to anyone who is looking to adopt a wonderful dog in need. SDS is always making sure that the pups are well cared for and helping those in the community that have dogs and may need some additional resources to ensure that the dogs are cared for with a helping hand."

"Senior Dog Sanctuary is a wonderful place to work. The dogs are treated with love and respect that they deserve after all the hardships they have been through. The senior dogs have so much life still in them and want to belong and loved by someone. We play ball with them, walk the trail many times a day with each dog. Sit on the benches for hugs and just enjoying the sun. If they don’t feel well we let them know we are there for them and give extra hugs. When someone ask me if I have any dogs I say about 24 because all of the dogs are in my heart. It’s always a special day when an adoption takes place. The dogs give us the love we need too."

Thousand Oaks, California has been a safe haven for Sniffspot host, Jen, since childhood. Having grown up in busy Santa Barbara, Jen, an introvert from an early age, would seek out solitude and serenity away from tourists attractions and droves of people visiting from elsewhere. “My grandparents own 60 acres about a 30 minute drive from here, and I grew up spending every summer and every holiday visiting them on the ranch,” Jen explained. “In Santa Barbara, we wouldn't go to the beach on the weekend because that's where everybody was, so you'd find places off the beaten path where the tourists weren't. For me, the ranch was just my happy place.”
