Dakota Dachshund Rescue is a private all volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
We are a small group of foster homes and volunteers who really love those short legged dachshunds that are called by so many names.....dachsies, doxies, wiener dogs, sausage dogs, lowriders. We also have foster homes that love other smaller breeds. We work together to bring in dachshunds, dachshund mixes and a few other small breeds that aren't doing well at the HS or need more vetting than the HS can provide, smaller dogs that need rehoming because their owners just can't keep them anymore, abandoned, abused, and unwanted smaller dogs.
Dachsies are intelligent, lively, comical, confident and courageous dogs. They are hunters and most have a high prey drive. They can be difficult to housebreak, and they have a tendency to be barkers. Dachsies are also faithful, versatile, stubborn, adorable, and we think irresistible!
We provide medical and behavioral care for each dachsie and other breeds coming into our rescue. We do our very best to help them put their best paw forward as they prepare for the forever homes in their future.
Dakota Dachshund Rescue takes every opportunity to educate those we come in contact with on the responsibilities of pet ownership, the prevention of cruelty to animals, and the need for pet owners to spay and neuter their pets.
One day at a time. One dog at a time. Friends Forever!

Adoption Policy
You will first need to complete an application. Please note that to complete the Adoption Application online, you will first need to register and login to our website using the Member Login - also to your left.
Keeping in mind our organization is run entirely by volunteers, we do our very best to begin processing your application upon receipt. If we have any questions regarding your application, we will contact you first. Typically though, we will proceed with contacting your personal references and your veterinarian before we get in touch with you. Depending on their availability, and ours, it may take a couple of days to complete this process. Please have patience. We know you are excited, and we are excited for you, but we are committed to making sure the dachsies, Dachsie mixes and Dachsie wannabees in our care are placed in safe and loving homes.
Sometimes we do have several applications come in for the same dog - especially after one of our monthly Meet and Greets or an Event in the community. While we do take into consideration the order the applications came in, our first priority is always going to be the dachsie. Just as we are committed to ensuring we place our adoptable dogs in safe and loving homes, we are just as committed to placing the right dog with the right families.
Generally our adoption fees range between $250 and $750 plus sales tax and is based on the age and breed of the dog. Puppies tend to require more veterinary care with their vaccination schedules, there is the cost to spay and neuter all dogs that come into rescue (if needed), and all our dogs are kept current on their routine vaccinations, including necessary dental visits. In truth, due to the circumstances that many of our dogs enter rescue, our adoption fees rarely cover the costs of helping them to become the forever friend you wish to adopt.
We will work together to find a time and place in Sioux Falls SD for you to meet and adopt your forever friend! On the chance that you have not met the particular dachsie you wish to adopt, or several have caught your eye and you would like to spend more time with them prior to adopting, we would be happy to arrange a time for you to travel to Sioux Falls so that you can meet.
We do not transport the dogs.
Our monthly Meet and Greets are also great opportunities to meet the dogs and speak to the families they foster with. You just need to let us know which dogs caught your eye, and they will be there! Paws Up!

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
