District 5 Animal Alliance is for the dogs! The folks in this organization go to any lengths to save dogs on the streets of Detroit. They don’t just look for pretty dogs that will be adopted easily and bring in cash. They help the underdogs. I was lucky enough to foster my first two dogs through D5. They made it easy and SO rewarding. The experience has made me want to continue fostering and saving these dogs’ lives. I’ve had two fosters find forever homes since the end of December. They were both emaciated and in an overcrowded shelter that euthanizes regularly due to lack of space. D5 saved these two dogs, among countless others, and they are now living happily ever after. These folks have all of my respect and deserve to be recognized for all the difference they make for dogs and the humans who love them!Jennifer Barst

"Not sure where to begin & just wish I could give more . I'd like to speak about 1 person that I've known many ,many year's . How she finds time to do all she does is so impressive . Mother ,wife , daughter , caregiver , Dr. , and the list goes on . Her heart is Huge ,then to find time to run the rescue . She really deserves an award . These animals are lucky to cross her path . Thank You to All the wonderful people ,for all the love , time , patients , your Hard work that is put into this rescue . Life is so unfair....."

"In February 2024 I read a post about a female intact 5-7 year old stray from Detroit, Boxer Bulldog mix, very scared in the shelter. Her pic melted my heart, the fear showing in her eyes. I contacted the poster. A rescue was needed to save this pup in order to foster. I had worked with the President of D5 in the past, so I suggested D5. The poster contacted D5, and Yes was the response.
There was a hold on the dog, so the day after the President met me with the sweet pup and a ton of supplies. The dog had been vaccinated, spay was soon scheduled. The dog.was actually in the E room at the shelter, so another life saved.
Dr. Weirmiller, President. treats each and every rescue with love and kindness. She knows all her rescues' names. Dr. W's heart has no boundaries when it comes to her cause.
This was my first experience with fostering, and I was so impressed. Such a wonderful loving and caring organizatioKathleen n!"

"District 5 works hard for Detroit dogs. They aren’t trying to pull as many dogs as they can from out of state; they know how bad our need is in help for our local dogs and they make it happen for them ❤️ as someone who is out trapping and trying to find placement for these dogs, they have been a huge help and one of the few who doesn’t turn me down. They save so many and even as small of a rescue as they are, actually are making a difference for Michigan dogs."

"Thank you for saving my now tripod puppy from an uncertain future in Detroit and providing him with the love, care and nurturing as needed before I became his forever mom. I traveled from WI to MI (6 hours) to bring him home. Both the rescue and the foster family were communicative, kind, efficient and huge advocates for finding a home for my little guy! I am so thankful that he’s a part of our family and feel so fortunate that he waited for me to take him home."

"I’ve been with D5 for two years; they are the most wholesome group of people who are passionate about saving dogs. I myself have taken in close to 20 dogs fostering over the past two years."
