Our History
Great River Rescue is a private, non-profit, companion animal shelter located in Bemidji, Minnesota. We make every effort to save, care for, and find homes for each animal that comes through our doors. We provide high-quality care and enrichment for shelter pets, and get them into homes with loving and responsible pet owners. Additionally, we now offer low-cost spay/neuter services through our Pet Fixers program. Great River Rescue is supported by our community, who believe in our work and have always been by our side.
Since our inception in 1977, Great River Rescue has helped thousands of animals get a second chance at life. We are very proud of these and many other efforts that have made our dream a reality and now allows us to provide even greater quality service for more than 350 animals per year.
Great River Rescue is located in Bemidji, Minnesota, but we have no geographic restrictions for our services. Our services are available for anyone in need. For more details about the services we provide, please visit the services section of our website.
Our mission at Great River Rescue is to transition dogs and cats to loving homes, serve as a community resource, and advocate for kind, responsible pet care.
Great River Rescue envisions a society of responsible animal guardians in which every animal is treated with respect and care.
Our values are care, compassion, and empathy for animals and people; accountability to high standards of professional and ethical behavior; and respect and kindness with every decision and interaction.
Our Facility
We built our current facility on Carr Lake Road SE in 2000. Mike Hesch, from Hesch Construction, volunteered his services for this project, and we are eternally grateful for his generosity. The shelter was able to raise $165,000 of the necessary $225,000 for the project. A loan was taken out for the remaining costs, which has since been completely paid off, largely due to our community’s donations! Since then, we have made several improvements to the facility including new flooring and paint in 2020. In 2021, we completed a remodel project to convert one of the dog kennel rooms into a visitation and exam room. The cost of that project was also covered by community donations and grant funding. We are constantly looking at ways to improve our facility to better serve the animals and the community.
Mission and Vision
Great River Rescue transitions dogs and cats to loving homes, serves as a community resource, and advocates for kind, responsible pet care.
Adoption Policy
Great River Rescue Adoption Policy
Great River Rescue provides quality care for homeless cats and dogs until a suitable home can be found.
To be considered for adoption, you must:
● Submit an application for adoption
● Provide a valid driver’s license or State ID
● Be over the age of 18
● Show proof of your current address (current utility bill, lease, landlord statement)
● Demonstrate the ability to provide a stable home, a safe environment, necessary veterinary care and nutrition, basic training, identification and companionship for the pet
● Complete an adoption contract
● Provide a reference from your veterinarian (if you have previously owned pets)
● Agree to speak with shelter staff periodically to assess the well-being of the pet
Other Considerations:
● Appointments must be made at least one day prior to adoption.
● Cats will not be adopted as “Barn Cats” unless attempts to socialize are futile.
● All animals will either be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, unless doing so would threaten the health and safety of the pet, or the adopter will be given the opportunity to spay or neuter their adopted pet through GRR programs or veterinary partnerships
Every attempt will be made to find the best match possible between the pet and its new family at the discretion of Great River Rescue staff.

Get your dog the safe enrichment they need by renting a Sniffspot

David Adams is a man of many passions, but his love for dogs stands above all. He is not only a dog lover, but also the founder of an innovative platform called Sniffspot. This unique platform connects dog owners with private property owners who are willing to rent out their space for off-leash playtime. While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development.
David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners.
Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature.
David is based in Salem, MA.
