Rescues are frequent. Re-homings are more frequent. Re-homings differ from rescues in the fact that we will have a history of the dog and its need. Puppies don't normally need to be placed until they get bigger than the owner had intended and therefore are not as common in rescue.
Please keep in mind that most ‚rescue/rehome dogs, are placed because of behavioral problems, most, but not all. Many of the dog's issues were due to lack of training and socialization. Most problems can be addressed and corrected in a stable and loving home. If you really want a Berner, do tons of research. Our advice is to attend shows, join a BMD club and research breeders. If you would like to be considered for a rescue or re-homing, please read our policy's on the Adopting page.
The mission of the HMBMD Rescue program is to take in dogs of Bernese Mountain Dog parentage that are in shelters, surrendered by their owners, or that have become lost and abandoned, and to place them in permanent pet homes in order to help provide a safe harbor that they might otherwise be destroyed or abandoned.

Adoption Policy
Every adoption is unique. We go off of adoption applications and fit a dog to the application. We primarily require homes to have fenced yards. Homes with an electronic fence we do not adopt to. All dogs are spayed/neutered and up to date on rabies, bordatella, DHLPP and heartworm tested.

"Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog rescue is run by an amazing team who go above and beyond to rescue the unwanted, sick, strays and puppymill dogs. It takes incredible dedication and commitment from all of their volunteers, fosters and supporters. Having this kind group of people rally around the care and wellbeing of these beautiful dogs is amazing.
This rescue gave me the opportunity to add a 3 legged Bernese Mountain Dog named Autumn to my family. She was given up by her previous owner because she had a damaged rear leg. Without knowing what her prognosis would be , they took her in and treated her. She unfortunately sustained so much damage that it had to be amputated. I was experienced in owning a tripawd so when Autumn was listed for adoption, I jumped to fill out the application. They approved us as her forever family and I will always be thankful to them. If a rescue ever needed the support or recognition, it’s Heart of Michigan Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue."

"I have fostered twice with this group. My first foster I failed. This group uses people from the Tri-state area and even farther to coordinate fosters, transports, and anything else a foster might need with ease. No Berner is left behind and no expense is spared helping these dogs get whatever treatment necessary. They do not rush the dogs to adoption. They give them time to decompress and learn how to be indoor dogs before searching for just the right home. A lot of these dogs come from Amish puppy mills and have had minimal healthcare and even less love and socialization. They are all given whatever they need to blossom into their sweet, loving, tolerant, super hairy, gigantic selves. They will do whatever is necessary and then some for this beautiful breed and our world is a better place because of it"
