Since 1966, HumaneCNY has been CNY's oldest and largest no-kill animal shelter. We receive no financial support from any governmental agencies or national agencies with similar names and solely survive on private donations from our community. We take in approximately 1,000 animals a year and perform nearly as many adoptions.

Mission and Vision

HumaneCNY's mission is provide our community with an animal shelter that shows compassion and respect for life by following a no-kill philosophy and by striving to provide the cats and dogs entrusted to our care with permanent, loving homes.

Adoption Policy

We do deed/landlord and vet checks to ensure that animals are allowed in the home and are up to date on vet care. We do not adopt out to students or individuals under 21 years of age. We also ask for an employer name and check an extensive local "do not adopt" list to ensure those applying for our animals have good intentions and are fit to own a pet.

"HumaneCNY is a remarkable organization. Founded in 1966, HumaneCNY is now a cornerstone of animal rescue in Central New York. A $2 million renovation completed in 2019 enhanced the quality of life for animals by creating a safe and comfortable environment that replicates the warmth of a home and improved safety, air filtration, and sanitation throughout the shelter. Rebuilding the dog kennel and animal intake/hospital areas, enhancing the community cat and dog rooms, and providing meeting areas for the staff and visitors allows HumaneCNY rescue and find homes for hundreds of cats, dogs, and other small pets every year. HumaneCNY’s staff and volunteers contribute to a friendly and welcoming setting that improves the adoption experience for both animals and their adopters. The time volunteers devote to shelter cleaning, walking dogs, and socializing cats allows shelter staff to focus on dog obedience and cat behavior training, administering medical treatments, scheduling vet visits, interviewing adopters, and making the important decision to place each animal into the best possible home. HumaneCNY exists due to the generosity of compassionate animal lovers who understand the value this shelter offers to the Central New York community which HumaneCNY looks forward to serving for many years to come!"

"HumaneCNY is a no-kill animal rescue that has cared for homeless animals since 1966. The staff is compassionate and goes above and beyond when caring for these animals until they find their forever home. Often caring for animals in their own homes especially those puppies and kittens without a mom."

"When a young cat who was pregnant with a prolapsed rectum was picked up off the street, I volunteered to take her to a vet appointment, thinking that my encounter with her would be that simple. She was spayed and the prolapse repaired, but she needed a foster to recover, so I took her into my home. The prolapse repair was not successful and had to be addressed two more times. She had by this time (merely 3 days later) already purred her way into my heart. After the third time, I took her to the vet convinced that her life would have to be sacrificed. The vet suggested a radical and costly option, a colpopexy, and to my pleasant surprise, our outstanding ED agreed. I had named her Olivia, and knew if the surgery was successful, she would come to be with me. The shelter staff at HumaneCNY could not have been any more attentive as she recovered at the shelter following the surgery! After five weeks of recovery, and my daily visits to her, she became part of my family. Without the care, love, and dedication of Maureen, our ED, and the staff, my little Olivia would not have had a fighting chance on the street. Thank you, HumaneCNY, for everything you do."

"I volunteer as a cat socializer. HumaneCNY is always looking for people who would like to play with the cats to give them the opportunity of human touch and play. I have trained several myself. They have even asked for donations to hire a 'cat whisperer' to work with difficult cats and selected a small team of socializers to work with this specialist and learn her techniques. We have a log that we fill out to let others know what cats we have worked with and if there are any unusual circumstances (both positive and negative) that we feel others should know. They set up a program with a neighboring grocery store to occasionally bring in a few cats as a stress reliever for employees, and to show off the cats. HumaneCNY truly cares. I don't work with the dogs at all, so I can't comment on them."

While the idea of Sniffspot was initially conceived by his wife, Rebecca, David has been the driving force behind its remarkable success, tirelessly overseeing its growth and development. David's dedication to providing safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs to play, explore, and socialize is evident in his unwavering commitment to Sniffspot. He strongly believes that dogs need ample space and opportunities to stretch their legs and have fun. As a result, he has worked tirelessly to build a network of private property owners across the country who share his vision and are willing to offer their space for the benefit of dogs and their owners. Despite his busy schedule, David always finds time to indulge in his passion for the great outdoors. He loves nothing more than exploring new hiking trails and embarking on thrilling outdoor adventures. Whenever he is not working on Sniffspot, he can often be found hiking or visiting multi-acre fenced sniffspots with his two beloved dogs, Soba and Toshii. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the fresh air, breathtaking scenery, and the sense of freedom that comes with being in nature. David is based in Salem, MA.
