Since 1992, the Winona Area Humane Society (WAHS) has been dedicated to improving the lives of our community's companion animals by providing humane care to adoptable shelter dogs and cats, and offering public services to pet owners in need of support.
Our no-kill animal shelter does not receive municipal or federal funding to carry out our mission. Thanks to fundraising, grants, and generous donations, our passionate hands-on staff & volunteers are able to care for at least 14 dogs and 50 cats at a time, and place an average of 227 cats and dogs in loving forever homes every year.
Mission and Vision
WAHS animal-centered mission involves rescuing and rehoming the homeless and abandoned, reuniting strays with their families, rehabilitating common behavioral, medical and physical ‚pet problems, reducing overpopulation by spaying/neutering all adoptable animals, and modeling animal welfare and responsible ownership for the prevention of animal cruelty.
Adoption Policy
To adopt an animal from WAHS, individuals must be 18 years or older, have a valid ID, pass a basic background check, and fill out an adoption application. If the above qualifications are met, the application is approved, and your home is a good fit for the animal, you'll be contacted to set up an appointment. At the appointment, potential adopters have one-on-one time with the animal they're meeting. Should the visit go well, a followup appointment will be made for adoption or another visit at the program Director's discretion.WAHS utilizes a sliding adoption fee scale depending on the animal, age, size, and future medical care.

"Staff is always excited to help with every successful adoption and remain optimistic with their long term residents. They were very helpful with watching my dog the one time she got out."

"The work done at the Winona Area Humane Society is nothing short of phenomenal. They are located in an area in the State where dog breeding at puppy mills is supported and are in direct competition with these breeders. Still they are able to find homes for their own animals as well as the occasional dump-off from people who no longer want to care for the dogs or cats. People who find a forever friend at WAHS are thrilled and many come back for a 2nd animal later on. It's a lot of work, but worth the reward when finding a forever home for the animals and bring so much joy to the families who take in their new furry family members."

"The Winona Area Humane Society has had a piece of my heart for many years. The shelter's guiding missions have impacted SO many lives, in so many ways, including mine.
Before beginning employment at the shelter, I used to visit as a child and still remember it fondly. When I returned to WAHS years later as a job applicant, I thought it would be a short-term, temporary occupation to pass the time with a purpose. Little did I know that working at WAHS would impact my life so significantly, for many years to come. Working at the Humane Society opened my eyes and instilled in me a lifelong mission to help those without a voice. It is now a passion that will last a lifetime.
Although a shelter is never a substitute for a home, WAHS provides each pet with love and comfort during their time. Each animal’s specific needs are tended to, and great care is taken to pair them with the best possible families.
Throughout the past few years I’ve been astounded by the meaningful work accomplished by a relatively small, dedicated group of staff and volunteers, despite constantly limited resources. Countless lives have been changed - from the pets who receive help, to the people who meet their forever friend.
The Winona Area Humane Society has been an essential part of the community for nearly 30 years, continually standing strong as a safe haven when animals have nowhere else to turn. It’s an honor to be part of it."

"Winona area humane society takes the best care of their animals I have ever seen and go above and beyond for these animal. I have been lucky enough to volunteer there for the past 2 years and I have seen a lot of cases with animals who haven’t had the best lives coming in in horrendous conditions and they have loved them all back to life. They are a no kill shelter and will never and I mean ever give up on any of their animals, cats or dogs. I have gotten to help on their tiktok accounts the last 4 months and have gotten to see a lot of behind the scenes more than any other volunteer. Not only do they ensure these animals are nursed and loved back to their best condition but also ensure they go to the best home they can find. I hope you will consider them to be your winner as they have done so much for our area and the animals they have loved back to life and given them a second and even third chance at life."

"The Winona Area Humane Society has informed the public how important it is to keep cats inside. Being indoors provides for a good quality of life, good length of life and reduces injuries and diseases that cats out in the wild often succumb to. WAHS also have informed us that declawing a cat is like removing part of their fingers. It’s very painful and it leaves them defenseless should they ever get outside."

"WAHS truly lives their values and mission. I am a cat volunteer and adopted my senior lab from them and have had great experiences in both roles. The staff is very passionate and great at their jobs. They take good care of the animals there and are very knowledgeable! They are good at getting out in the community as well. Overall, a great humane society and I am grateful they serve our Winona community."

"In my short time working at WAHS, it has been an amazing experience. The other staff members and volunteers make the shelter an inviting and loving environment and really do their best to make sure all dogs and cats are happy and healthy. Having animals in a shelter can be seen as sad most times, which it is, but in my experience we have helped so many of them get where they need to be and come out better than ever in order to be placed in the perfect forever home. It is not an easy thing to do to be there for the heartbreak some of these situations can give you, and that’s why I think the Winona Area Humane Society is an amazing shelter, because through good and bad, we all find a way to come together for these animals that have not been dealt the best hand in life."
