The purpose and main function of Arizona Border Collie Rescue (AZBCR) is to promote humane treatment through rescue, rehabilitation, education and the re-homing of neglected, abandoned and unwanted Border Collies. Learn about our functions and activities as a rescue organization. These are all the projects and endeavors that we are presently engaged in and that can and will be expanded on in the future. Rescues & Relinquishments We are contacted by private individuals who are no longer able to retain ownership of their dog(s), and provide availability to take possession of those dogs. We canvas state and local shelters and remove those dogs that are at risk of euthanasia. We are also contacted by other rescue organizations seeking help with placements. We do not limit ourselves solely to Arizona, but are also available for nationwide networking. Health Care AZBCR is very health-oriented and we do our best to verify health status of all our dogs. These dogs are rescues and adopters should understand that a complete and verifiable health history is typically unavailable to us (as in the case of stray dogs or shelter dogs). All dogs adopted from AZBCR will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and any dog suffering illness or injury will receive necessary treatment and medication. Our fosters typically provide grooming for the health and comfort of each dog, and necessary treatment is provided for internal and ectopic parasites. Every AZBCR dog wears an ID tag attached to his/her collar while in foster care and we recommend that adopting families keep the tag on the dog. In addition, we microchip every dog and ask that you keep the registration information updated. Transportation Volunteers network to provide means of transport in both emergency and non-emergency situations. This includes retrieval of dogs coming into AZBCR, transport to and from veterinary facilities for medical attention, transport to and from training and socialization activities, and shared travel to meet prospective new families. Foster Homes We advertise and interview for foster homes and guardians for incoming rescues, initiate training programs for new foster families in the appropriate care and handling of the dogs, and arrange meetings between foster care homes and adoption applicants. Counseling and Education We provide counseling on training and behavior to our foster homes, potential homes, new homes and those contacting us regarding placing their dog with us due to problematic behavior. Adoption Policy

Adoption Process Arizona Border Collie Rescue is not a facility that you can visit (like a shelter). All our rescued dogs are currently living with families in foster homes somewhere in Arizona. We do operate statewide and occasionally take in dogs from nearby states. Step 1: Online Application While filling out your application, please provide enough information so that we can assess what characteristics in our dogs may be a good match for you (e.g., temperament, activity level, and types of activities you enjoy). Even though you are interested in a specific dog, there may be others that more closely meet your needs. Remember that we take in dogs frequently and some newer dogs are not yet on our website. The best thing to do is to begin the application process by completing our application online (even if you don't yet see a dog of interest on our site). Step 2: Phone Interview Be sure your application has the phone numbers where we can reach you most easily. Within 3 days after submitting your application, someone will contact you to discuss your application. Step 3: Home Visit After we have talked with you and decided that we can help you to find a dog, we will arrange for a home visit. The purpose of this visit is two-fold: to ensure a healthy, safe environment for our dogs, and to ensure that we match you with a dog that fits your living style. Step 4: Meet the Dogs After the home visit, the fun begins: meeting the dogs. Please remember that you may not have been the only family that put in an application for a particular dog. Our dogs will be placed with the best match for that individual dog (and not necessarily the first family to apply). We strongly encourage the meeting take place at the foster's house, very infrequently it is at the adopters' home or a mutually agreed upon location. The goal is to see how the dog gets along with your family and any other pets. This step may take days or even weeks for you to find the right dog for your home. And always we will recommend dogs that we believe will match you and your lifestyle and all the members of your family (human or animal). Step 5: Adoption The last step in the process is for you to adopt one of the dogs. We believe that adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. We work hard to help you select the best possible match for you and the dog. Please stay in touch with us following your adoption. We are always happy to provide additional advice regarding training, nutrition and activities that Border Collies enjoy. We also plan to follow-up with you to see how your new dog is adjusting. You will be provided with the dog's veterinary paperwork, the information you need for licensing and verification that the dog's microchip has been transferred into your name. We are all volunteers, and it is typical for the paperwork to be mailed to you 2-4 weeks post adoption. Please remember that a new home is a big adjustment for the dog. Being patient while providing consistency and basic training will help your dog feel secure and prepare both of you for many happy years together. Step 6: A Happy Life Together Please don't forget us once you and your dog are happily adjusted to life together. Some of our past adopters decide they want to volunteer (even become a foster home), or want to support the rescue via tax deductible donation. We love to hear stories about our dogs, especially the foster families who loved and cared for your dog while on its journey to meet you. Photos of happy Border Collies enjoying their lives are particularly welcomed. And we're here for you too... for help with training challenges, advice on ongoing care, how to get involved in dog sports and other activities that Border Collies enjoy.
