Berea Animal Rescue Fund

#91 in United States, #7 in Ohio, #2 in Cleveland

Berea Animal Rescue Friends (ARF) is a no-time-limit animal shelter that rescues stray and homeless companion animals, provides medical care, spay/neuter, vaccinations and housing, and prepares animals for adoption into loving homes. We began as a grassroots organization in a family's garage and through hard work and the dedication of volunteers answering a real need in the community; the operation grew when the city of Berea provided us with a small building and utility costs; in return the shelter agreed to always have an open cage for the city's strays. The shelter was incorporated in 1987, and has now become one of the largest shelters in the region. In 2012 ARF purchased 16 acres of land in Columbia Township as the site to build a much-needed, larger shelter facility. We launched a Capital Campaign to raise funds for building, and in June of 2020 we moved into our beautiful new 5,300 square foot shelter . offering greater capacity to house animals and an enhanced environment for volunteers and adopters.

Paws and Prayers Pet Rescue

#96 in United States, #8 in Ohio, #1 in Youngstown

At Paws and Prayers, a dedicated force of volunteers drive our goal of saving as many animal lives as we possibly can. Founded in 2001, Paws and Prayers blossomed from the notion that all cast-off animals deserve only the best lives as loved, indoor pets. With a higher power's guiding hand and unending prayers, the rescuers that formed Paws and Prayers sought to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home forgotten, neglected, or otherwise left-behind pets. One of the first of its kind, Paws and Prayers rescuers formed a foster-based rescue system in which every saved pet was cared for in the loving homes of the organization's volunteers until the perfect adoptive home is found. In its inaugural year, Paws and Prayers saved the lives of 200 dogs and cats. Paws and Prayers ever-growing base of volunteers and foster homes proudly saves hundreds of pets each

Rose's Rescue

#100 in United States, #12 in Ohio, #3 in Akron

Rose's Rescue is 501(c)(3) non-profit all-breed rescue run by a small group of volunteers and no paid employees. We do not have a central shelter location that is open to the public as all of our rescued friends are in foster homes. Who we are and how it all began: It all started when founder Rose Sachs answered an ad in the local classifieds that said they could help a person find homes for unwanted pets. Rose had recently moved to a rural setting with some acreage, and had subsequently acquired 4 or 5 dogs that had been dropped off or that she'd found abandoned and was trying to find new homes for them. It was 2002, and she ended up partnering with the person who placed the ad, calling themselves "New Leash on Life." After about a year, they went their separate ways, but Rose continued her work re-homing pets in need. She found a few other like-minded people to help her - just one or two at the start, and Rose's Rescue was born. It took several years to grow into something more than just basically a few foster homes, but by 2004 had become a relatively cohesive group with a more defined process and mission. On October 10th of 2006, Rose's Rescue was officially granted it's 501c3 status. Since, then, we have continued to grow with more volunteers, a more structured operation, and more animals under our care, We utilize modern technology with the implementation of a large database system (through rescuegroups.org), our own website, active Facebook page and busy event calendar. We strive to not only help the animals we have rescued, but also work to support our local pounds where there is a need we can address, (provide vet transport, help to defray vet costs, etc), and work with other rescues and shelters in our area for the benefit of animals in our greater community.

Colony Cats & dogs

#100 in United States, #12 in Ohio, #6 in Columbus

Colony Cats is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary mission is to address cat overpopulation in central Ohio through public awareness and spay/neuter efforts. Since 2002, our organization has facilitated spay/neuter of nearly 26,000 cats and dogs, and placed more than 21,000 pets in homes. We have a cage-free cat adoption center and a network of foster homes for friendly, adoptable cats and kittens (as well as dogs/puppies we encounter while assisting cats) that have been rescued. We are also in partnership with area pet supply stores that help us by showcasing our adoptable cats at offsite locations throughout central Ohio (click here to see a list of offsite locations). Specialized help for feral, stray and abandoned cats is a core element of our programs. We assist compassionate caregivers who are feeding and watching over homeless cats by providing TNR (trap-neuter-return) and other support services including food, shelter, vaccines and additional vet care for injuries/illness, as well as educational resources. Experts estimate that there are more than one million feral and stray cats in this area; animal shelters can't accommodate such a vast number due to lack of space. Sadly, thousands of cats in the region are being euthanized each year. Through Colony Cats' humane, non-lethal programs, homeless cats can have the decent, healthy quality of life they deserve and better co-exist with their feline and human neighbors.

I have adopted 2 dogs through Freedom Ride Rescue. Cam, who is now 3, we adopted in 2021. He was about 4 months old and had been picked up as a stray. Freedom Ride Rescue placed him into their foster care. When I met him it was love at first site. He is probably a lab, pit, hound mix and we couldn't love him more. Caroline, who is probably 7-8 years old - we adopted her last April from Freedom Ride Rescue. She is a great pyr who was confiscated from a horrible backyard breeder hoarder situation. Because of that, she had to spend 6 months in one of the shelters here in NC as "evidence." Once freed, she was placed into foster care. When we first met Caroline, we loved her. We just had to make sure she melded in with our other 2 dogs (Cam and Coal, our black lab) and our cats. She is the best dog and we love her to the moon. It is wonderful knowing that her life is the very best it has ever been. I also volunteer with Freedom Ride Rescue. So I know firsthand, that this rescue is all about its' army of volunteers and fosters. What started out as a boutique rescue 4 years ago has grown into one that has now saved over 3000 dogs! It is such an honor to volunteer with Freedom Ride Rescue and live my passion of loving dogs and saving them

    Berea Animal Rescue Fund

We have been supporters of Buckeye Basset Hound Rescue for several years. We have fostered and adopted 6 hounds from this wonderful rescue and experienced their "wrap-around" services when accepting a new dog from them inclusive of medical care (some of the dogs rescued by BBHR required extensive and expensive treatments prior to placements) behavioral assessments and transportation assistance. BBHR has several social events through the year as well as attendance at local and regional adoption "fairs" throughout Ohio to promote the group and to advertise our available Hounds. Wonderful and caring administration of the Rescue group as well as strict impeccable fiscal management of the group make it easy to support.

    Paws and Prayers Pet Rescue
    https://data.sniffspot.com/full-fit-in/768x512/Photos/SeoDogRescue/900/0cfadbb34897-Logo__1_.png
    youngstownOhioUS
There was the dog that saved his family from a fire. There was the dog that fell through the ice in a lake and came to his foster home in a fire truck with the fire man’s hat upon his head. There was the dog missing a leg who became the support dog for the man with no legs. And there was the cat that taught the little shy child to finally speak. There have been so many. Founded in 2001 and celebrating its 20th anniversary, Paws and Prayers Rescue blossomed from the premise that all cast-off dogs and cats deserve the best lives possible as loved indoor pets. Paws and Prayers Rescue has rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed approximately 19,000 dogs and cats in those 20 years and hopes to do even more. All pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots and treated medically for a myriad of illnesses and injuries. Paws and Prayers has met its mission all these years and for the last several years has been able to use One of a Kind Clinic for their spays and neuters. Unfortunately, due to the loss of One of a Kind Clinic’s veterinarian staff, they are no longer able to do the low cost spays and neuters for which they have become a main stay of the community and so many rescues. One of a Kind picked up the Rescue’s dogs and cats at the Paws and Prayers facility in Cuyahoga Falls and drove them to their clinic for $50 per trip which was a wonderful way to transport and saved so much money. Now, Paws and Prayers will need to transport to other sites, some in other counties, with its group of volunteers manning or womaning the steering wheel. So the bottom line is, the rescue needs a van or large panel truck that can be used for spay/neuter days. The Rescue needs to find someone who can donate a van and/or needs donations that the rescue can use to purchase a van. Right now you are talking about 1,200 pets a year or 50 biweekly, cats and dogs. In fact, although the rescue is averaging about 1,200 pets a year currently, it has done as many as 2,000 in one year. The rescue takes animals from pounds, owner surrenders, and referrals. The rescue takes as many animals as it has volunteers to foster with overflow at its office. Jamie Ternes, Board Vice President and animal intake person, says “Most of our expenses go to medical costs. The general public are not the ones who will pull a cat with a broken leg or a dog that tests positive for heartworm. We take those pets because they will be euthanized otherwise, and they are sweet, loving animals and deserve a chance. “ Dee Lees, a Board Member, who concentrates on cat adoptions states, “A lot of our cats once were in a home, but someone moved and could not or did not want to take the cat with them. The cat was left or let out. They are so happy to have a new home where they are loved. And then there are the kittens, so many, so cute, and so dependent on socialization. But working with them helps the kittens and helps the volunteers even more when they realize the progress made.“ Also, there is Kaylee Jakubecz, only 23, who in her short number of years has already fostered and adopted almost 300 dogs and puppies into good homes. Kaylee loves to do pregnant moms, loves the birthing, and loves watching the babies open their eyes and grow into lovable pups. Kaylee has been a volunteer for Paws and Prayers since she was 14 years old and continues to cherish each of her new fosters. The Rescue owes its existence to its volunteers and most work is completed free of charge by those same volunteers. There are groups of volunteers: dog walkers, fosters, a group that calls themselves the Green Team as they show pets at a pet store in Green Ohio. There are cat people, transport people and dog people. There are so many events volunteers can attend: pet adoption sites, Portage Lakes Pirate Days July 24, Bow Wow Beach, September 19, and Yappy Hours at the Winery at Wolf Creek each second Tuesday of the month to name a few. To sign up to be a volunteer, check the website at www.pawsandprayers.org and if you would like to donate to the group’s transportation vehicle, you can send donations to Paws and Prayers Rescue, 1407 A Main Street, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44221 or check the website. Any help would be greatly appreciated. “Paws and Prayers Rescue tries to educate the community, save discarded dogs and cats, and make a difference,” said Cathy Ruther, a volunteer, “and I love helping them.”

We then vaccinate, deworm, apply flea prevention, microchip and spay/neuter puppies, subsequently placing the animals up for adoption. Angels for Animals

Angels for Animals was seeded in the minds of Polly Wardle and Diane Less. It took root on the backs of horses while trail riding in a discussion about barn cats. With the help of a lawyer, Angels officially sprouted and was incorporated in 1990. The pet project began out of their homes and farms, running ads promoting spaying and neutering and meeting with veterinarians and other groups. With the publicity, this sparked individuals to dump cats and dogs at their homes which quickly became overwhelming. In 1994, they decided to renovate a vacant chicken house into a shelter for animals. Mutual animal advocates began to volunteer and the homeless and helpless animals began to be a much bigger problem than they realized. The dream became bigger to work to build a bigger and better shelter.
