There really aren’t enough words to describe what a great organization Lu’s Labs is. Their whole purpose is to adopt labradors to loving homes. They are definitely a group with the focus on placing a dog with the right people and want only want the best for their rescued labs. They even pay vet bills for dogs they rescue that are hurt or sick before adopting them out! I couldn’t be happier with my little black Lab Starr which I was fortunate enough to adopt from them! They are a caring, Lab loving organization of the highest caliber!

I have been with AWLA since the were on Peyton St. The work they do today has everything to do with the town. Alexandria loves animals. Every pet is given vet care, as much behavioral training as needed and promised to a loving foster maybe or readied to go their forever home. We take animals in from other states and yes! Other countries. The little ones have blankets and toys and wonderful, nutritious food and look forward to good walks with trained volunteers everyday. God bless the wonderful people who love to work there.

Vindicate Pit Bull Rescue was founded in 2014 by a group of volunteers with one goal in mind: restore the reputation of the misrepresented and misunderstood "pit bull". VPBR pulls pit bull type dogs from the shelter which are often ill from an unforgiving environment. From freedom ride to adoption, our dogs are in a foster home where they receive full vet care, nutrition, basic training and sometimes even care from a veterinary behaviorist. Our Animal Placement team matches each dog to a home where they will thrive.

At GDU, we are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of special needs and exceptional animals. We believe that every animal deserves a chance at a happy and fulfilling life, and we work tirelessly to ensure that they get just that. Our rescues come from all over the country, primarily from rural and high-volume shelters. These animals often have special needs or require exceptional care, and they come to us when there is no other hope for them. We arrange their transport and ensure they receive necessary medical care from a licensed veterinarian. Upon arrival, our animals find refuge in caring foster homes as they await their forever families. Our fostering application process mirrors the same meticulous approval standards as our adoption procedure, guaranteeing the best possible homes. This fostering period provides invaluable insights into our animals' personalities, enabling us to make ideal matches with their perfect forever homes. During this time, we seek to enrich their lives through positive enrichment activities and training. This helps our animals learn essential skills and build their confidence, making them more adoptable and increasing their chances of finding their forever homes. Our approach combines scientifically proven positive behavior modification methods and time-tested best practices from our amazing foster families. We pride ourselves on matching animals with families on an individual basis, considering factors like temperament, lifestyle, physical and mental needs, and emotional and social well-being. This personalized approach ensures an unparalleled adoption match success rate.

I adopted my Rottweiler Brock from MSGBR in October of 2019 when this amazing rescue was still new. I was so excited to know the founders were former coworkers of mine. The adoption process was so smooth. Brock had been vetted and well on his way to getting healthy from poor living conditions. This rescue is hands down the best. They are honest, fierce and give their absolute all for the dogs in their care. They also support and work with other rescues, shelters and a local community outreach.

As a volunteer at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria , I can attest to the passion, professionalism and dedication of this shelter. Having volunteered for six years, I have seen firsthand the love, concern, effort, education and compassion that it takes to care for homeless animals. The staff are dedicated and often perform unseen yet important duties to keep animals in a clean and safe environment, along with the robust education provided to volunteers to ensure animals are treated humanely, have ample enrichment, and are safe. The work of the shelter also extends to the community: supporting pet parents with resources, low cost vaccines, food, and even safekeeping of pets when a pet parent faces unforeseen circumstances.

SSR has rescued, rehabilitated and found forever homes for over 3,000 dogs and counting. This rescue does not cherry pick. They take dogs with serious injuries, near death sometimes. It sometimes costs 10s of thousands of dollars in donations to get them well and give them the life they so deserve. It takes a village and SSR has a wonderful village of volunteers that rescue, foster, process adoption applications/home visits and screen applicants for the dog adoption. It doesn’t get any better than SSR!

Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue (SSR) was founded in January 2017 and is a 501c3 Animal Welfare rescue focused primarily on the rescue of German Shepherd Dogs (GSD) & GSD mixes. Based out of the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, we expand our reach & work to save German Shepherd Dogs in heavily populated, high kill areas in south Texas. SSR pulls the dogs that most other rescues can't or won't take. Most have medical issues, aren't vaccinated, are heartworm positive, pregnant, needing costly surgery, etc. Once they are vetted in Texas and healthy enough for transport, they are brought to Virginia to meet their foster. SSR is not a brick and mortar facility. Rather, we are foster-based, meaning that every dog that comes into our care goes into a home environment, where they can be readied for their forever home. about shenandoah shepherd rescue

My younger Aussie came to us through SOHO ... he's a paragon of beauty and grace that probably wouldn't have lived another week had he not been rescued by SOHO from a shelter, looks notwithstanding. He was found living rough in the forest with his brother as a 5 month pup - and while his brother was immediately adopted, he was so severely reactive that he'd fly into an uncontrolled rage at the mere sight of a dog outside a car window. SOHO supported us through the critical first month with Zoom meetings in the height of COVID, until we could find a trainer and behaviourist to work with such a reactive dog. He's still got significant limitations, but is a marvelous and loving person who wouldn't have stood a chance without SOHO's devotion. Down the street is my older Aussie's best friend who came to his family from SOHO, and a more clever, elegant, Chaplin-like tramp fellow you'll never meet. Again second and third chances from dedicated pro's.

We have taken in many herding dogs into our foster homes and paired them with wonderful adoptive homes. Our dogs come primarily from shelters, though we do occasionally take in owner surrenders based on evaluation and circumstance. We are foster-based and do not have a main facility, as we believe that all dogs should have a home - even if it's temporary and while they are in search for their forever home.

We are HUGE fans of flop!! We adopted ( formally named mimosa) - now named peanut! Our Mohawk terrier mystery mix pup in March of 2021. Peanut has brought so much joy and unconditional love to our lives. Flop the rescue took such good care of her when we adopted her and I was so thankful she had the opportunity to be in an environment like that. The amount of care flop does to vet adoptions, and respond to applications, and run their Facebook is amazing. We are forever grateful to know the unconditional love of peanut, who sneaks into our bed when we fall asleep each night… and who are we to kick her out? For she deserves it. Thank you flop for all you do.

Our goal is to provide compassionate care for our dogs while they are with us and to find them loving, forever homes. We were founded with the belief that each one of us can make a difference in the world, one rescued dog at a time. Our rescue has grown and now helps small to mid-sized dog of all breeds and mixes. Most of our dogs have had a rough start in life and we do everything we can to make sure they have a wonderful life. We start by making sure all of our rescues have whatever medical attention they need. We have adopted two of the most wonderful pups. We adopted Bacon three years ago after one of our pups crossed the rainbow bridge. Bacon is a large mixed breed weighing in at 90 lbs. At the young age of 10 weeks Bacon had major surgery to attach his intestines to his body cavity. Four months ago we adopted Zoie again after loosing one of our pups. Zoie is a mixed breed, pit and Chihuahua along with 12 other breeds (a true designer pup) weighing in at 38 lbs. She has the biggest over bite I have ever seen which not only makes her so cute but also so special. Many Miles 2 Home helped us find special needs pups that would fit in with our pack. The rescue is really special in that they really go out of their way to save many pups both sick, healthy, special needs, and abused and unwanted.

    Richmond

Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) was established as the first city pound on June 5, 1902. Since then, it has served as the only open-admission public animal shelter in the City of Richmond. We provide humane care for more than 3,000 stray, sick, injured, and relinquished pets per year. Our focus is on keeping owned animals out of the shelter environment and instead offering pet owners a variety of rehoming options and resources to find placement for their pet(s). With such a great need for immediate intervention with stray, sick, and injured animals in our area, our ability to take in surrendered animals is limited, and we operate on a case-by-case basis when the space and resources are available in this regard. While we seek to help every pet that comes into our care, there are instances where humane euthanasia is the only option. When an animal is considered a danger to the community or is suffering due to a severe medical condition, we believe the most responsible and compassionate option is humane euthanasia. First and foremost, our commitment is to public safety and ending unnecessary suffering. RACC is not considered a "no-kill" animal shelter and does not subscribe to this label. However, we never humanely euthanize animals due to space or length of stay. Our Animal Control unit investigates animal cruelty, enforces humane laws, and issues pet licenses/permits. These services include the enforcement of City ordinances related to animals, removal of killed or injured animals/wildlife, impoundment of stray pets, and investigation of animal-related neglect, cruelty, nuisance, and bite cases. The RACC Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is committed to championing the success of our agency. The Foundation works hand in hand with RACC, diligently contributing to the expenses of vital emergency care, while simultaneously elevating marketing and outreach initiatives through strategic fundraising and volunteer coordination. United in their passion for saving lives, RACC and The Foundation are thrilled to unveil a tapestry of heartwarming stories, showcasing unwavering compassion for our City's most vulnerable animals.

I absolutely love this shelter. The staff are so unbelievably caring and take time to really listen and respond thoughtfully to questions. Joe in the behavior department has been especially helpful. He knows everything about dogs and can tell you what they’re going to do before they do it! It’s truly unbelievable.

I am currently fostering for vindicated pit bull rescue. I can’t say enough great things about the whole team. The way they advocate for pit bulls and save so many lives from being euthanized due to BSL is admirable. They do everything they can to help their foster dogs get adopted and support their fosters with anything and everything they need. They are doing amazing things for this misunderstood breed.

    Vindicated Pit Bull Rescue

Vindicate Pit Bull Rescue was founded in 2014 by a group of volunteers with one goal in mind: restore the reputation of the misrepresented and misunderstood "pit bull". VPBR pulls pit bull type dogs from the shelter which are often ill from an unforgiving environment. From freedom ride to adoption, our dogs are in a foster home where they receive full vet care, nutrition, basic training and sometimes even care from a veterinary behaviorist. Our Animal Placement team matches each dog to a home where they will thrive.

I cannot say enough good things about Lu’s labs. From moma Lu herself, to all the wonderful volunteers, alumni page and of course the labs!! We are the proud parents of two Lu’s girls. Back in 2020 when we all thought the world was ending we met Jill and Sabrina from the Charlie’s Angels litter (now known as Roxy and Riley). Our journey began when are senior girls each were diagnosed with cancer w/in a few months of one another. Worried one would be w/o a partner we began our search and Found Lu’s labs. From our case manager to the foster parents and the support system our experience has been remarkable. We thought we were headed to VA to pick up one and came home with two. There were only four in this litter and after all adaptees picked their pups, one was left. It just happened to be my first choice. After talking with everyone and confirming our girls got along with one another we had two new family members! Since adopting we have become part of the Lu’s family and we not only keep in touch w the rescue but all the other adoptive families. These connections were some of my more memorable stories from the pandemic. To this day I display my autographed book from Emilia (The sassiest and sweetest Lu’s senior Facebook ever met)! Lab lovers need look no further for a rescue, with Lu’s you not only get a fur baby but an entire family for support.

  • Richmond Animal Care and Control Logo

    Richmond Animal Care and Control
