Key to lions heart rescue

#43 in United States, #2 in Maryland, #2 in Baltimore

Key to Lion's Heart Rescue was founded in January 2018 in honor of Lion, a dog who made a tremendous impact on so many lives. Lion was dumped at a very high kill shelter where his time was up. Without knowing his past, he was pulled by a rescue and placed into a home. Lion was then moved nine times over the course of one year in an effort to find the right home. Unfortunately, the second to last move was that one that forever changed his soul. Just like people, dogs have a breaking point, and Lion had reached his. He had been through more in one year than any dog should ever have to go through in a lifetime. His last move was to a home where he was loved and cared for by a handful of people, his advocates for many months. Unfortunately, it was too late. The pain and suffering he had endured in some of his previous places was more than Lion could overcome. The light in his eyes was gone and he was suffering. In the arms of the people who loved him dearly, we whispered our goodbyes and told him how much we loved him. Humans had failed him. As we kissed him goodbye, we promised Lion that we would do our best to ensure no dog would ever have to endure what he had in his last year. At that moment, we dedicated ourselves to unlocking hope for all dogs by giving a little piece of our hearts to every single one that we can save.

3 Acres Rescue

3 Acres Rescue is a no-kill Animal Rescue in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, that specializes in dogs, cats, and livestock. We rescue pets from high kill shelters across the United States and bring them to our rescue to then rehome with applicants that are extensively processed with our Application Processing Team. Marilana Zahedi-Mullis is the founder of 3 Acres Rescue and established her nonprofit status as a 501(c)3 in 2022. 3 Acres Rescue does not profit from donations or adoption fees; all money goes toward the pets' care. Costs for rehoming a pet on the euthanasia list include things like, transport fees to get them to safety, certificates to cross state lines, initial vet care, spay/neuter fees, microchipping, additional vet care when needed. These fees outweigh the adoption fees we charge, so we really rely heavily on donations and volunteer hours. When adopting a pet from 3 Acres Rescue, you'll received a fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped pet. 3 Acres Rescue also coordinates a decent number of our rescued dogs specifically for Heartworm positive pups, which we will provide funding/medication for slow-kill Heartworm treatment. Over a hundred homeless and abandoned animals were able to find their fur-ever homes from September-December 2023 alone. Our dream is to give every pet a fair chance at life. Could you help?

As a foster for Canine Humane Network, I had the profound experience of caring for a litter of 10 puppies and their mother, all fighting possible distemper. Despite the heartbreaking loss of two pups to neurological complications, the relentless care and love we provided around the clock allowed the remaining eight to thrive. They've now tested negative for distemper and are ready for adoption. This journey was challenging, yet incredibly rewarding, and it showcased the life-saving impact of dedicated fostering. Without this intervention, these puppies wouldn't have stood a chance.

Key to Lion’s Heart is an amazing rescue. They are truly dedicated to finding good homes for so many dogs, even hard-to-place ones. This rescue intentionally requires more in their application process (home visit, etc) to ensure each adoption will be a good fit - KTLH families become part of the rescue’s ‘family’ when they’ve adopted, the investment in placing each dog is a forever one and the support before/during/after adoption is unique, showing the true *heart* of this rescue’s mission.

    Senior dogSenior dog
I first learned of Reed’s Rescue by seeing some FB posts about them and was really touched by their mission of pulling senior and hospice dogs from shelters and finding them loving homes to live out the rest of their days. During the pandemic, my husband and I were both working from home and we made the decision to reach out to Reed’s Rescue and apply to be a foster. A few weeks later we were approved and we took in a sweet 15yr old pittie named Fudgesicle who was pulled from a NC shelter and brought to us. He was the sweetest elderly gentleman who got along great with our other two dogs and cat. It was such a joy to see his smiling frosted face every day. After two months, he went on to get adopted by a loving family who continues to send me happy updates about him. It was such a rewarding experience that we immediately reached out to Reed’s to get our next senior foster. In all, we have fostered 4 dogs with Reed’s Rescue, all who went on to loving homes, including our own. The last one was a “foster fortune” as Reed’s like to put it, not a “foster fail.” We took in Dale, a 13yr old pittie who was found as a stray and in a very overcrowded Baltimore shelter. Without a rescue/foster, he would have been euthanized in a matter of days. We saw his listing and with the the help of Reed’s, we pulled him and brought him to our home. He is such a sweet, loving old man that after a month, we decided to keep him and let him live out his golden years with us. Now a year later, he continues to live his best life with us. Being an animal rescue advocate, sadly I see so many stories of people dumping their older dogs or taking them to the shelter because they want a younger dog or don’t want the responsibility any more. This is when dogs need us most. These seniors are sad and confused and often overlooked by adopters. So when I saw what Reed’s Rescue was doing, it touched my heart and I knew I wanted to be a part of it. It honestly has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and am thankful for what they do.

Miri’s is so special because they work to save the most vulnerable. The old. The sick. They really do amazing work and turn dogs’ lives around in their golden years. I’ve had the pleasure of fostering a few sweet boys over the last few months and they not only found their forever families, but also positively changed my life. I started fostering with Miri’s when my dad got sick and passed away. I can't say enough good things about this rescue organization and my experience with them has been nothing short of life-changing. They rescued both of my babies (the loves of my life) from horrible situations and ensured that they were fully vetted and cured of pre-existing conditions, ready for a fresh start at life. The rescue volunteers were in constant contact with us, available to answer questions and provide support. This was vital as we first adjusted to having a new puppy, Ivy in 2020 and then a year later when we decided to adopt Maisy, despite the challenge of her having to undergo a lengthy heartworm treatment. The fact Forever Changed pays for all medical care is unbelievable to me given the number of challenging medical cases, like Maisy's, that they encounter. My experience was so positive that it has prompted further involvement with their organization (donating, helping with fundraising efforts, attending and helping out at events, and fostering more dogs). Everyone I have met who is affiliated with them has truly been a saint and I am now lucky enough to call several of them my friends. The Forever Changed volunteers are some of the kindest, most hard-working, dedicated people-- they pour their hearts and souls into this "volunteer work," which is beyond a full-time job for them, and I know all of it takes an emotional (and physical) toll. I am so grateful to Forever Changed and can't imagine a rescue group that is more trustworthy and deserving of increased exposure/support.

We’ve worked with several rescues and Petey and Furends is such a gem. Their approach to finding the best match for the adopters and pets is fantastic, they are incredibly supportive of their fosters, and I’ve never seen so much dedication to the animals- they take on pups in particular that other rescues would pass over, get them the support they need, and find them great homes, no matter how long it takes. It is a pleasure working with them and we can’t imagine fostering with anyone else.
